The trailers don't show what the film is really like, which is a sort of fly-on-the-wall style documentary. It is shot in real time with bouncy hand-held cameras, which just makes it seem that much more real.
I know the concept is alien, it's sci-fi, and a lot of people immediately dismiss that as unrealistic and something that's just a bit silly. I am a big fan of sci-fi so I have no problem enjoying films that depict aliens coming to earth. But this film... this film showed it in a completely new way. It wasn't that clean, sterile look, it wasn't aliens with superior technology come to kick our butts. It was very real, very raw and very disturbing at times. I know it was the torture parts that upset me the most (I do not handle scenes like that very well at all) but the overall feel of the film was very dark, very down and very scary. Not scary because it was "aliens" but because of the humans in the film.
I can't really explain how good this film was because a part of me would never want to see it again because I don't want to be left feeling that sick and sad again. But another part of me thinks it was probably one of the best films I've ever seen to have caused such strong reactions in me. I highly reccomend it whether you're a sci-fi fan or not cos this film does not feel sci-fi at all.
"District 9" was funny, scary, traumatising, sickening, heart-felt, touching, upsetting - it was the full spectre of human emotions! Go and see this film immediately!
